File: Bordeaux Futures 2007: The Winemakers
Sandrine Garbay started in the cellars at Chateau d'Yquem right out of oenology school. She's now the cellar master or winemaker for the legendary Sauternes chateau. I first met...
Sandrine when she was the lecturer for sweet wine viticulture and winemaking during the year I studied in the DUAD program at Bordeaux University. She was enthusiastic, youthful and direct, and clearly someone who could handle pressure with competence.
She also stood out as one of only two female lecturers in a pool of 28. Bordeaux winemaking remains a boy's club. Is it changing? Certainly, though often by default.
The lack of a male heir leaves estates in the hands of daughters, widows and nieces. It's rare to meet a female winemaker who is not an owner. There is not a single female wine consultant in Bordeaux.
Just before the Bordeaux futures campaign began, I visited Yquem with colleagues Frederic Lot and Philippe Simon. Sandrine invited us to taste the new vintage and talked about the making of what is sure to be a much-feted vintage.
For more on Yquem 2007 and other less expensive options in Sauternes, I highly recommend reading Frederic Lot's tasting notes on Yquem 2007 and Sauternes 2007
